Understanding Grade Curve Calculator
What is Grade Curving?
Grade curving is a method used to adjust test scores based on the distribution of scores in a test. It helps normalize scores when a test is particularly difficult or easy, ensuring fair evaluation across different test administrations.
How is Curved Score Calculated?
Curved Score = ((Raw Score - Lowest Score) / (Highest Score - Lowest Score)) × 100
This formula scales your raw score to a 0-100 scale based on the actual score range in the test.
Grade Letter System
- A+: 90-100 (Excellent)
- A: 80-89 (Very Good)
- B+: 70-79 (Good)
- B: 60-69 (Above Average)
- C+: 50-59 (Average)
- C: 40-49 (Below Average)
- D: 30-39 (Poor)
- F: 0-29 (Fail)
Rank and Percentile
Rank indicates your position among all test takers (1 = highest score). Percentile shows the percentage of students who scored lower than you. For example, a 90th percentile means you scored better than 90% of test takers.
Rank = ((Highest Score - Raw Score) / (Highest Score - Lowest Score)) × Total Population
Percentile = ((Total Population - Rank) / Total Population) × 100
Example Calculation
Example scenario:
- Total Population: 100 students
- Highest Score: 95
- Lowest Score: 45
- Your Raw Score: 75
Curved Score = ((75 - 45) / (95 - 45)) × 100 = (30 / 50) × 100 = 60.00
Grade Letter: B (since 60 falls in the 60-69 range)
Rank ≈ 40 (assuming linear distribution)
Percentile ≈ 60% (better than 60% of students)
