Understanding UPSC Marks Calculation

UPSC Civil Services Examination Structure

The UPSC Civil Services Examination consists of three stages: Preliminary Examination (Prelims), Main Examination (Mains), and Personality Test (Interview).

Preliminary Examination

The Prelims is a qualifying examination with two papers (General Studies Paper I and CSAT Paper II). Marks obtained in Prelims are not counted for the final merit list. You need to qualify Prelims to appear for Mains.

Main Examination (Mains)

The Mains examination consists of 9 papers:

  • Paper A - Indian Language (300 marks) - Qualifying
  • Paper B - English (300 marks) - Qualifying
  • Paper I - Essay (250 marks)
  • Paper II - General Studies I (250 marks)
  • Paper III - General Studies II (250 marks)
  • Paper IV - General Studies III (250 marks)
  • Paper V - General Studies IV (250 marks)
  • Paper VI - Optional Subject Paper I (250 marks)
  • Paper VII - Optional Subject Paper II (250 marks)

Total marks for merit: 1750 (Papers I to VII). Papers A and B are qualifying in nature (minimum 25% required).

Personality Test (Interview)

Candidates who qualify Mains are called for the Personality Test (Interview). The Interview carries 275 marks and assesses the candidate's suitability for a career in public service.

Final Marks Calculation

The final marks are calculated as follows:

  • Mains marks (out of 1750) are scaled to 1000 marks
  • Interview marks are added directly (out of 275)
  • Final marks = (Mains marks / 1750) × 1000 + Interview marks
  • Maximum final marks = 1275 (1000 + 275)

Important Notes

  • Prelims marks are not included in the final merit list
  • Only candidates who qualify Prelims can appear for Mains
  • Only candidates who qualify Mains are called for Interview
  • The final merit list is prepared based on final marks (out of 1275)
  • Cut-off marks vary each year based on vacancies and candidate performance
