SMP formula (summary)
What is NHS maternity pay?
Most NHS staff receive Statutory Maternity Pay if they qualify (service, earnings, timing) plus occupational maternity pay which tops up salary for a defined number of weeks.
SMP vs OMP
SMP follows UK law (90% then lower of statutory rate or 90%). OMP is employer-specific—often full pay, then half pay + SMP, then SMP only.
Eligibility (simplified)
- Continuous employment with the employer for long enough (26 weeks into “qualifying week” is typical for SMP).
- Enough earnings above the Lower Earnings Limit (LEL)—check current HMRC figures.
- Give notice and evidence in time.
