Step-by-Step Instructions
The Cumulative GPA Calculator helps you calculate your overall Grade Point Average (GPA) across multiple semesters. You can track your academic progress, calculate weighted or unweighted GPA, and see how each semester contributes to your cumulative GPA.
Step 1: Set Number of Semesters and Courses
At the top of the calculator, enter:
- Number of Semesters: Enter how many semesters you want to include (1-20). Default is 2 semesters.
- Number of Courses per Semester: Enter how many courses each semester should have initially (1-20, max 20). Default is 4 courses per semester.
The calculator will automatically generate all semesters and courses based on these values. You can add more courses to individual semesters later if needed.
Step 2: Choose Weighted or Unweighted GPA
Toggle the Weighted GPA switch:
- OFF (Unweighted): All courses are weighted equally. This is the standard GPA calculation method.
- ON (Weighted): Allows you to assign different weights to courses (Regular, Honors, Advanced, AP/IB, or Custom). This gives more credit to challenging courses.
Step 3: Enter Course Information
For each course in every semester, fill in:
- Course Name: Enter the name of the course (e.g., "Mathematics", "English Literature")
- Grade: Select the grade you received from the dropdown (A+, A, B+, B, C, D, or F)
- Credits: Enter the number of credit hours for the course (e.g., 3, 4, 2.5)
- Weight (if Weighted GPA is ON): Select the course weight:
- Regular (1.0): Standard courses
- Honors (1.1): Honors level courses
- Advanced (1.2): Advanced placement courses
- AP / IB (1.3): Advanced Placement or International Baccalaureate courses
- Custom: Enter your own weight value (appears when selected)
Step 4: Add More Courses (Optional)
If a semester has more courses than the initial number, click the "+ Add Course" button in that semester to add additional courses. Each course can be removed individually using the "Remove" button.
Step 5: Calculate GPA
Click the Calculate button to see your results. The calculator will display:
- Semester GPA: The GPA for each individual semester (shown below each semester)
- Cumulative GPA: Your overall GPA across all semesters
- Total Credits: The sum of all credit hours from all semesters
Understanding GPA Calculation
The GPA is calculated using the following formula:
GPA = (Sum of (Grade Point × Credits × Weight)) ÷ Total Credits
Where:
- Grade Points: A+ = 4.0, A = 4.0, B+ = 3.5, B = 3.0, C = 2.5, D = 2.0, F = 0.0
- Credits: The credit hours for each course
- Weight: 1.0 for unweighted, or the selected weight (1.0-1.3 or custom) for weighted GPA
Using the Fill Example Button
Click the Fill Example button to see a sample calculation with pre-filled data. This helps you understand how the calculator works and what information is needed.
Tips for Accurate GPA Calculation
- Use Official Grades: Enter the exact grades from your transcript for accurate results
- Check Credit Hours: Verify the credit hours for each course match your institution's records
- Weighted vs Unweighted: Understand your school's GPA system. Some schools use weighted GPA, others use unweighted
- Regular Updates: Update your GPA after each semester to track your academic progress
- Real-time Calculation: The calculator updates GPA automatically as you enter or modify course information
- Custom Weights: Use the Custom weight option if your school uses a different weighting system
Understanding Your Results
The calculator provides:
- Semester GPA: Shows your performance for each individual semester. This helps identify which semesters were stronger or weaker.
- Cumulative GPA: Your overall academic performance across all semesters. This is the GPA that appears on your transcript.
- Total Credits: The sum of all credit hours completed. This helps you track your academic progress toward graduation.
